Welcome to the Department of History! We are a community of scholars and students active in the study and practice of History with emphasis on the Caribbean, Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and their global connections.

The university achieved independent degree-granting status in 1962, as the University of the West Indies. By then, the university had acquired the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture at St Augustine in Trinidad, which became its second campus.

The Department of History and Archaeology provides a thorough understanding of Caribbean history, archaeology and heritage studies as well as world history which have helped to shape the region.

The university was founded in 1948 in Mona, Jamaica, as The University College of the West Indies, based on a recommendation by the Asquith Commission, which had been established five years prior to review the state of higher education in the then-British colonies.

The University Archives is responsible for the overall development and implementation of the University Archives and Records Management Programme (UARMP) which serves all the campuses of The University of the West Indies.

The UWI, Mona ranks first in Jamaica among accredited tertiary-level programmes. In 2012, the University was again one of Jamaica’s Top 100 Employers.

On site tours to Great Houses, docks, slave markets, burial grounds and historic churches allow them to fully engage with the history. This is buttressed by introductory history and world history courses.

The UWI was established in 1948 and had the foresight to create an extra-mural department within the University to provide the Caribbean community with essential outreach services. This was seen as an integral part of the very concept of being a regional university.
