UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) 좌표계는 Transverse Mercator와 투영법이 같으나 투영식에서 사용하는 원점 위도와 중앙 자오선, 축척 계수, 원점 가산 상수 등이 다를 뿐입니다. UTM 좌표계는 미국에서 만든 좌표계로 주로 군사용 지도 및 해도에서 이용되고 있으며 지구를 6˚ 간격의 경도 (경선)과 위도 (위선) 8˚ 간격의 총 60x20 개의 격자로 나누어 각 격자마다 설정된 원점에 대하여 투영된 Northing, Easting 좌표로 나타냅니다.
