Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.

Parris Island is home to entry-level enlisted training for approximately 50 percent of all Marines in the Marine Corps. Recruit Training Regiment is the parent command for the personnel who accomplish the depot’s mission of "Making Marines."

The battalion was established on Aug. 6, 1940, 25 years after Parris Island was first designated as a Marine Corps Recruit Depot. The location selected for the battalion was previously known as “East Wing” but was redesignated as the “Training Center” in January 1940.

Our mission is to facilitate the making of Basic Marines through providing supporting capabilities from the time recruits set foot on Parris Island until they graduate as Marines. Special Training Company (Company R):
