US 6 was the longest US Highway, once going 3517 miles coast to coast from Long Beach to Provincetown on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Today it remains the second longest, being only 116 miles shorter than US 20.

In 1937, US 6 was finally extended to Long Beach, CA, making it a truly transcontinental route. This extension also made the highway the longest signed route in the United States, with a total of 3,662 miles from Provincetown, MA to Long Beach, CA.
