UHCL’s hand sign mimics the talon of a hawk, the university’s mascot, and was created and voted on by students. After students expressed the desire to distinguish UHCL from other universities, the campus held a student hand sign contest.

Feb 17, 2025 · Upon graduation, as new alumni move the tassel on their caps from left to right, they should turn their rings so that the UHCL faces outward. The official UHCL class ring then becomes a visible, tangible symbol of the ever-present bond between UHCL and its graduates.

UHCL's Mascot Program exists to foster campus pride and spirit. It consists of two main areas, Hunter the Hawk and their Flight Crew. Hunter the Hawk: Our costumed mascot talent, Hunter the Hawk, serves as the official ambassador of university spirit and pride.

UPDATE 10/15/2021: The new ‘UHCL’ and ‘HAWKS’ letter sculptures were installed Friday, Oct. 15. The ‘UHCL’ letters located in the alumni plaza and ‘HAWKS’ letters located in front of the Arbor building were removed Sept. 16. They will be replaced with permanent stone sculptures featuring lighting.

Nov 10, 2022 · For me, the hawk fits as a mascot for UHCL in many ways. The red-shouldered hawk (among many other hawks) is a common sight on campus. Those visiting campus are likely to spot a hawk flying or perched on a power line on campus.
