German submarine U-196 was a Type IXD2 U-boat of Nazi Germany 's Kriegsmarine during World War II. The submarine was laid down on 10 June 1941 at the AG Weser yard in Bremen, launched on 24 April 1942, and commissioned on 11 September 1942 under the command of Kapitänleutnant Eitel-Friedrich Kentrat.

U-196 attempted to fire two torpedoes at a target in a convoy off South Africa, but only one launched, leaving the other lodged in its tube armed and ready to detonate. The potentially catastrophic hazard was removed by diving the boat at a steep angle until it slid out of the tube.

The ex-sailor told Brooks that the U-boat came alongside to obtain updated maps and charts. The captain of the U-boat said he was bound for a German colony in Patagonia, possibly Caleta de los Loros. The U-boat, from sources other than Brooks, has since been identified as the U-196.
