If Turning Red was a little less "real" and more like, say, Ruby Gilman (which, as far as I can tell, leans more into the fantasy element and doesn't have any references to puberty or periods), I think it would have just been discarded as being too bland or milquetoast, or unrealistic in its portrayal of middle school aged kids.

The more I think about it, the more I love that the mom's red panda ended up becoming a Tamagotchi. I like to interpret it as, despite her choosing to once again repress her emotions and her true self, she still ended up with a healthy outlet, an escape, a hobby that allows her to be in contact with her true self.

Mar 12, 2022 · Turning Red is one of my favourite Pixar films. I loved how goofy it was, the early 00s fashion, the playful friendships, the cuteness of the red panda. It captures the awkwardness of puberty so well, pressures and family expectations - it's Pen15 for the whole family. True kino.
