The Tiananmen / ˈtjɛnənmən /, [1] also Tian'anmen, [2] is the entrance gate of the Forbidden City imperial palace complex and Imperial City in the center of Beijing, China. It is widely used as a national symbol.

Tiananmen Square or Tian'anmen Square (/ ˈ t j ɛ n ə n m ə n / [1]) is a city square in the city center of Beijing, China, named after the Tiananmen ("Gate of Heavenly Peace") located to its north, which separates it from the Forbidden City.

After weeks of unsuccessful attempts between the demonstrators and the Chinese government to find a peaceful resolution, the Chinese government deployed troops to occupy the square on the night of 3 June in what is referred to as the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Standing at the juncture where the central axis of Beijing and Chang'an Avenue meet, on the northern edge of Tiananmen Square, Tian'anmen Tower (Gate of Heavenly Peace) is the symbol of modern China and featured on the emblem of the People's Republic of China. It served as the gatehouse of the Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Mar 6, 2025 · The square derives its name from the massive stone Tiananmen (“Gate of Heavenly Peace”; first constructed in 1417)—once the main gate to the Forbidden City—situated at its northern end. On a two-tiered marble terrace in the centre of the square is the Monument to the People’s Heroes (completed 1958).

Jul 2, 2021 · Originally built during the Ming Dynasty, Tian'anmen Square is named after Tian'anmen Gate, which is the main gate to the Forbidden City. The gate has five passages, the middle one leading to the Forbidden City was particularly reserved for the emperor.

Tian'anmen, the Gate of Heavenly Peace, at the north of the square, is the main gate to the Forbidden City. Zhengyangmen (meaning 'Gate of the Zenith Sun' and now commonly known as Qianmen), to the south of the square, marks the southern entrance into the heart of old Beijing.
