THOR science: clouds | Earth - NASA
Unlike radars, THOR can detect clouds consisting of small droplets and cannot confuse clouds with drizzle. Because the background solar illumination causes large observational noise in THOR's wide field-of-views, THOR can provide cloud observations only at night.

THOR (air-based) | Earth - NASA
6 days ago · Thor is an airborne lidar instrument designed to measure the thickness and internal structure of highly scattering media such as thick clouds, snow, or sea ice. It is a multi-view lidar system: It emits short laser pulses and observes both the spatial and temporal characteristics of the pulses spreading inside the probed media.
lower cloud halo than a ground-based THOR (Love et al. 2001; Polonsky et al. 2004). The third system, an in situ cloud lidar, was built in Colorado for aircraft flights inside clouds (Evans et al. 2003).
THOR science: cloud observations used in the 2002 THOR ... - NASA
Mar 25, 2002 · The plot reveals the cloud base and top as the two temperatures are very close in the humid air inside the cloud whereas they are far apart in the surrounding dry air. Such meteorological observations were also used to corroborate THORs measurements.
THOR flies on the NASA P3, and measures the halo timings from several km above cloud top, at the same time providing conventional lidar cloud top height. The ARMISGP micropulse lidar provides cloud base height for validation.
THOR—Cloud Thickness from Offbeam Lidar Returns
Jun 1, 2005 · Cloud Thickness from Offbeam Returns (THOR) is an airborne wide-angle detection system with multiple FOVs, capable of observing the diffuse halo as a wide-angle signal, from which the physical thickness of optically thick clouds can be retrieved.
THOR: Cloud Thickness from Off beam Lidar Returns
Sep 7, 2013 · THOR - Thickness from Off-beam Returns - is an airborne wide-angle detection system with multiple FoVs, capable of observing the diffuse halo, detecting wide-angle signal from which physical thickness of optically thick clouds can be retrieved.

THOR science: thickness retrievals for clouds and for snow and ice
THOR's most distinguishing feature is that its multiple wide field-of-views provide spatial and temporal information on multiple scattering processes that occur deep inside thick media such as thick clouds, snow, or sea ice.
