Countless reef fish, gorgeous sponges; all in 20 to 15 foot depths. One hour of excellent diving, only cut short because I got cold.

Partly protected by the BVI National Parks Trust, the Dogs are sanctuaries for birds and marine animals. The unusual name is due to the barking noises early sailors heard here, which came not from canines but from Caribbean monk seals, later hunted to extinction. The diving and snorkeling here are excellent.

These five small uninhabited islands known as “The Dogs” are situated just west of the northern most part of Virgin Gorda and east of Scrub Island. The Dog Islands were named for the barking sounds that were once heard by passing mariners coming from the seal population of days past.

Nestled amongst a cluster of islands known as The Dogs west of Virgin Gorda; West Dog is surrounded by Great Dog, George Dog, Seal Dogs and Cockroach Island.
