Taddeo Gaddi (c. 1290, in Florence – 1366, in Florence) was a medieval Italian painter and architect. He was the son of Gaddo di Zanobi, called Gaddo Gaddi. He was a member of Giotto 's workshop from 1313 until the master's death in 1337.

Here we’ll explore in details the series of frescoes by Taddeo Gaddi, that are in the right transept of the Baroncelli Chapel. These frescoes depict scenes from the ‘Life of the Virgin Mary’ and include the “Annunciation to the Shepherds”, famous for being the first night scene to be shown in an Italian fresco.

Until his death in 1366 Taddeo Gaddi was one of the most influential men in Florentine artistic culture. Despite being viewed as a simple follower of Giotto, Taddeo triumphantly surpassed his liege in the methodology of colors and light.

Taddeo Gaddi was one of Giotto’s most important pupils and one of the leading painters in Florence in the 14 th century. According to Cennino Cennini, Gaddi worked with Giotto for twenty-five years and Gaddi’s works reveal a close relationship with that of his master, to the extent of borrowing his compositions.
