The T-34A commenced service as USAF's initial primary flight trainer at "contract" pilot training air bases across the southern United States, replacing extant North American AT-6 Texan trainers. Following training in the T-34A, USAF pilot trainees would advance to the North American T-28A Trojan for intermediate training.

The U.S. Air Force used the T-34A for primary flight training during the 1950s. The original Mentor, a Beechcraft Model 45 derived from the famous Beechcraft Bonanza, was first flown in December 1948.

It features differential braking to aid steering control, rudder pedals and wing dihedral. The first T-34B was delivered to the USN in 1955.

Performance of the USAF T-34A and the Navy T-34B would be identical, through expressed in different terms: High Speed 189 mph (164 knots); cruising speed at 60% of rated 225 hp at 10,000 feet, 173 mph (150 knots); maximum permissible diving speed, 280 mph (243 knots).

The first T-34C Turbo-Mentor began student training in January 1978 and production of this model reached 353. A number of countries have purchased a variation of this model to provide forward air control and tactical strike capability.
