Marvin " Popcorn " Sutton (October 5, 1946 – March 16, 2009) was an American Appalachian moonshiner and bootlegger.

Popcorn Sutton was moonshine whiskey's greatest ambassador and its greatest craftsman. His spirit was born from deep holler; from wood, steel, fire, water, shotgun, and Appalachian mist. His story is alive and well and it speaks for all who live without apology or regret.

May 25, 2021 · You can no longer buy moonshine produced by the original Popcorn Sutton because he died in 2009 after committing suicide to avoid jail and because of his cancer diagnosis. But this original recipe still exists.

Dec 6, 2024 · In March 2009, the gregarious moonshiner Marvin “Popcorn” Sutton took his own life at the age of 62, 10 days before he was to begin a prison sentence for practicing what he considered to be an aspect of his heritage.

Popcorn Sutton was a moonshiner born in Maggie Valley, North Carolina. In fact, he came from a long line of bootleggers and considered moonshining his birth rite. Sutton indeed made his career out of this illegal trade.
