Suri Alpacas are members of the camel (camelid) family of South America. Their ancestors originated on the central plains of North America about 10 million years ago. These llama-like ancestors migrated south to what is now South America and evolved into primitive examples of today’s Guanaco and Vicuna.

Suris are the rarer of the two types of alpacas and comprise about 20% of the U.S. alpaca population. The Alpaca Registry (ARI) showed about 23,103 suri alpacas registered in the United States as of July 2009. These elegant animals are characterized by their draping locks.
