Step cut piston rings are used to stop a direct flow path between the cylinder and the piston. It is a very good bi-directional seal for many sealing purposes. They are commonly used in combustion engines, compressor applications and in die cast applications.

Genuine Chem-Cast® piston rings consist of a moly/glass-filled nylon step cut outer ring with a precision milled joint, together with a carboxylated nitrile 90 durometer oval expander ring. The expander ring is designed so as not to pinch between the joint of the outer ring during installation.

The step cut piston ring improves leakage control over an angle cut piston or butt cut. The step restricts a direct leakage path found in the butt cut design. The hook joint provides a latching of the piston ring to facilitate installation of the piston ring.
