The Romans called the Spatha a "Gladius" a believe. Gladius simply meant sword. Spatha derives from a Greek word and probably used interchangeably with Gladius once the short sword was phased out. I choose the Spatha. It is better for cavalry use and better against cavalry. It can be still used for thrusting in tight spaces as shown by Ammianus.

Now, the Late Roman Empire introduced the spatha, which will be commonly called as Longsword through the ages because it was longer than your typical Roman or Greek blade.

Gladius was very much strategic and tactical choice. Option which gave best of both worlds, to a point. Closer ranks (due to less room required per man) than ones with bigger weapons, but more maneuverability than spears.
