The leased L-1 locomotives were divided into two classes of locomotives on the Southern Pacific Transportation Company, those being the Southern Pacific Class GS-7 and Southern Pacific Class GS-8. [4] However, neither one of the two classes of leased L-1 locomotives were preserved, and they were all sold for scrap in 1957. [3]

After steam operations finished out of El Paso, the seven early L1's leased by SP were sent back to California, renumbered, reclassed GS-7, and used on the peninsular commute service. The later three L1's were classed GS-8.

The Southern Pacific Class GS-8 (ex- Cotton Belt Class L1) is a class of 4-8-4 built by the Pine Bluff Shops for the Cotton Belt Route, as Cotton Belt L1s but would be later leased to the Southern Pacific where they would be classified as GS-8.
