SP received 4 orders of GP35's totalling 160 units over a two year period. Initially numbered directly after the GP30's, in the 1965 renumbering these were renumbered sequentially after the Cotton Belt (SSW) GP35's.

The MK rebuilt units had a different nose 'red-wing' shape and non-standard numberboard numbers, the CN rebuilt units were exactly as per SP standards. Although the 6300's traveled all over the SP system, their assigned maintenance base was Houston.

SP GP35 6533, Tucson, Arizona, November 21, 1985, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built as SP 7421 in January 1964 (c/n 28475) on EMD Order 7695, it became 6533 after the 1965 systemwide renumbering. It was rebuilt to RL2000 by Republic Locomotive and now is apparently in Jamaica as Jamalco 1012.

Southern Pacific/Cotton Belt GP35R Info Page - Railfan
To reduce the maintenance on turbochargers, SP rebuilt a number of GP35's with non-turbocharged 645E engines, rated at 2000hp. Not a real success, as far more GP35's were rebuilt keeping their turbo's.
