
Southern Pacific 2706 - Wikipedia
Southern Pacific 2706 is a 2-8-0 "Consolidation" Class C-8 steam locomotive built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1904 for the Southern Pacific Transportation Company (SP). It is one of three surviving members of its class, and one of many preserved SP 2-8-0s.

Although usually used in pairs and trios, here we see five of the new units -- 2706, 2709, 2708, 2702 and 2703 -- on a westbound transfer run approaching the Huey P. Long Bridge at Central Avenue. The locomotives are literally clean enough to eat off of!

SP 2706 is a C-8 class. This photo was shot in the engine terminal in San Jose, California in 1953.. The engine survives today awaiting restoration. It was on display for years in Watsonsville, California.

SP 2706 was moved from static display in Watsonville, CA the day of the 7.1 magnitude earthquake in October, 1989. This locomotive is currently in pieces next to the Sierra Northern Railway diesel shop in Oakdale. I do not know the future plans for this locomotive. engine sold to John Manley in 1999. engine was originally trucked to Oakland.

Here, 2-month old SP MP15AC's 2705 and 2706 on an eastbound transfer run meet 8-month old MP MP15DC 1549 -- along with GP18 1963, MP15DC 1551 and GP38-2's 2060 and 2075 -- on a westbound grain train. Southern Paacific MP15AC units 2713, 2705 and 2710 were shoving Southern Pacific cab 1846 and 94 cars of Illinois coal up the Huey P. Long Bridge.

Two SP 2-8-0s at Bayshore in 1961 - Trainorders.com
In May 1961 I happened to be at Southern Pacific's Bayshore Roundhouse when SP forces brought in 2-8-0 SP2706 from the Bayshore deadline so I took a series of photos of the event. Also present on another garden track was 2-8-0 SP2836, fresh from being used in stationary boiler service elsewhere.

The 2706 is at Colusa, CA, along with three stubby "clear vision" tenders. I spoke with John a couple months ago and he's now looking for a contractor to erect a steel structure for use as a restoration shop.

In retrospect it probably would have been better to have got the 2706. It would look good double headed with the 1744. I recall this steam locomotive was under restoration by a group known as "Colusa Steam" a few years ago. Their site and FB page appear to have been taken down. Is the restoration on hold for the time being?
