Dec 12, 2020 · Southern #2100 was one of only 13 NW5 units constructed by Electro Motive Division. The unusual model was basically a NW2 switcher body extended behind the cab to accommodate a steam generator, plus the addition of Blomberg road trucks.

They are among the earliest GP35s built and a few of their specs differ from what you will find for a GP35, being throwbacks to GP30s. CB&Q also had some early GP35s that were ordered as GP30s.

The 2100 was the only NW5 on the Southern, and one of only 13 locomotives of this model. It was built in January 1947, and spent most of its life in and around New Orleans. It finally left after the arrival of some new MP15DC's in August 1977, and was retired two years later.
