Sony TC-580 - Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Sep 1, 2014 · While SHF is hands-down the best forum on the web for music related questions, it is often not the best place if you are asking highly-technical trouble-shooting type questions. For tape related diagnostic type questions like this, I would …

Reel to Reel buffs? - Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Jul 18, 2024 · An Akai X-1800sd which also has an 8 track player. And then a Sony TC-580 which actually has a tape on the reels. I have yet to even plug one in yet wiring is all in tact but old. I just know absolutely nothing on how to run these machines and looking for some help. Id like to start with the Sony since there is already a reel on it.
Refurb on TEAC 4070G Open-Reel, Auto-Reverse-Record, WIP,very …
Feb 22, 2006 · I don't want to refurb one myself, but I'm probably going to dump a Sony TC-580 on ebay that needs a lot of "going over". The reel brakes don't work and it probably needs a few adjustments and new rubber inside.

Jun 10, 2004 · I paid about the same for a Sony TC-580 about 10 years ago and regret ever spending money on it--it needs adjustments, the switches are all acting wonky, and I actually had a hub retainer fall off and spill and entire reel of tape on my head!
Nak OMS7--fix it or ditch it? - Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Apr 8, 2003 · I want to get rid of a Sony TC-580 reel deck that needs a lot of adjustments and a couple of minor repairs. It WILL go "as-is". I do have a service manual for it, but will sell that separately...or just sell copies of it like others do. I may also sell my Teac 3300 (which works flawlessly), and move up to a Tascam that is a little more modern. -=Rudy=-, Apr 8, 2003 #5
I just bought a Revox A77 reel to reel recorder...
May 30, 2004 · It's non-scientific and the head still may be usable (I believe some heads can be "relapped"--polished--to get rid of that lip), but at least you might be able to tell how bad a head is without a tape in hand. The head in my Sony TC-580 has a slight lip, but my Teac A-3300S seems fine, especially for its age. Good enough for my needs anyway.
Opinions on good open reel decks - Steve Hoffman Music Forums
Oct 2, 2003 · I also have a Sony TC-580, but it has been a problematic beast. I'm looking to unload it, but only to someone who would be mechanically inclined to give it a good tune-up (it needs some adjustments and probably some new rubber inside), or knows a good shop that could bring it up to where it should be.
Miscellaneous old cartridges--worthless, or no?
Feb 17, 2007 · A couple of them need work, like the dead Carver amp, and the Sony TC-580 reel deck that needs a lot of adjustments and some DeOxit. I may also get rid of one of my Harman-Kardon cassette decks, which actually is working fine, along with a Dual turntable that is just in the way these days.
