Kubota developed his own style of karate, naming it Gosoku-ryu ("hard-fast style"), and he consequently held the title Sōke, meaning "head of family/style." Kubota became an American citizen in 1974.

In addition to teaching his very aggressive style of Gosoku ryu karate, Soke Kubota has been acknowledged as the most active and innovative karate instructor in the field of law enforcement techniques.

Grandmaster Soke Takayuki Kubota was born on September 20, 1934, in Kumamoto City, Kyushu Island, Japan, to Denjiro and Somo Kubota. His family descended from a samurai clan that had conquered Okinawa Island centuries ago, leading to a ban on martial arts on the island.

It is with great sadness that I announce the passing of my Sensei of 43 years and friend, Soke Takayuki Kubota (September 20, 1934 to August 14, 2024). He was like the father I never had and he has had a huge impact on my life and the lives of countless others.
