Nov 8, 2020 · There are also other photos with strangely smiling Canadian soldiers, as if having a war wound was especially funny. The left one on the photo grins almost as crazy as the one in your photo, it even seems to me it´s the same guy. Maybe they have become a little balla balla from the horror of war, I don't know.

Having said that, I finally remembered the type of smile/ grin the guy in the WW1 photo is showing; a rictus. I'll put my money on shell shock or perhaps temporary hysteria after just seeing his best mate blown to bits in front of him (?) In this case especially, context is everything.
