In the ending of Shrek, the main conflict surrounding Shrek's quest to reclaim his swamp from fairy tale creatures culminates in a dramatic resolution. After rescuing Princess Fiona from the dragon-guarded tower, Shrek discovers that Fiona harbors a secret: she transforms into an ogre each night due to a curse.

However, the creatures inadvertently end up in the swamp. Angered by the intrusion, Shrek resolves to visit Farquaad and demand that he moves the creatures elsewhere, reluctantly allowing Donkey to accompany him as he is the only one who knows where Duloc is.

Continuity mistake: In the scene immediately following Fiona 's thrashing of Robin Hood and his Merry Men, Shrek is holding Donkey and they are staring at Fiona in disbelief. When Shrek drops Donkey and turns to follow Fiona, you can see his entire backside and it's unpierced.

When a green ogre named Shrek discovers his swamp has been 'swamped' with all sorts of fairytale creatures by the scheming Lord Farquaad, Shrek sets out with a very loud donkey by his side to 'persuade' Farquaad to give Shrek his swamp back. Instead, a deal is made.

First it’s about Shrek and Donkey, then Donkey takes a back seat (and becomes just comic relief) as Shrek and Fiona bicker and feud (classic buddy comedy material). Also the end of act 1 sets up act 2: Shrek can get his swamp back IF he rescues the Princess and brings her back safely.
