The EMD SD40-2 is a 3,000-horsepower (2,200 kW) C-C diesel–electric locomotive built by EMD from 1972 to 1980. The SD40-2 was introduced in January 1972 as part of EMD's Dash 2 series, competing against the GE U30C.

Feb 20, 2025 · During the 1960s the horsepower race was on as GE, EMD, and Alco cataloged increasingly more powerful models. However, railroads soon realized higher horsepower also equaled higher maintenance. The SD40-2 offered a fine balance of power and efficiency that sparked a firestorm in sales.

In March 2025, while revamping SD40-2 phase descriptions, I relabelled them as Phases 1, 2a, 2b, 2c and 3 - which makes more sense for the sequence of detail changes and is a closer match with the timeline for standard-cab units.

SD40-2B - Rebuilt cabless version of original. SD40T-2 - Built for the SP and the DRGW; has special type of cooling system. SD40-3 - Rebuilds incorporating microprocessor controls and improved cab system and design; notably from CSX.

Santa fe power meet's the old Bn power! It was cool to see the GP60B in H1 paint yesterday, but now a SD40-2B still in BN paint, pretty awesome! The last Oakway SD60 out in the wild with its original paint. It spent several days in Galesburg before making it final one way trip up to Chicago. An A-B-A set of BN painted power rests in Galesburg.

Heading up the yard tracks to go pick up a sting of auto racks. An 8 unit consist is making its way to the Diesel Facility as it runs along the yard while some other power; mainly EMDs, wait their turn to go through the service area in Galesburg, Illinois.
