Scott Rolen is a top 10 3rd baseman all time. He is extremely balanced Defensively he had a rocket for an arm, 8 gold gloves (which is 4th all-time for 3B), and has the 3rd best fielding runs score for a 3rd baseman (the defensive component of WAR). His 70 WAR is also one of the highest for a 3B, over 300 HR, slug% is nearly .500 for his career.

The subtler ‘at same position’ layer is also just a specific and intentionally chosen part to make Kent seem better than he was. Kent is a 2B and Rolen is a 3B. The pool of players Rolen is ranked against are much better hitters than the one Kent is ranked against.

I don’t hate Scott Rolen. I was 6 when he got traded. But please Phillies do not retire 17 but not 11 or 26 just cause Rolen made the hall of fame. It’s past time to put him on the wall of fame though. Had a better Phillies career than guys like Thome (who also deserves to be on too)

Scott Rolen was a drama queen of a player who wore out his welcome in two American cities with great fan bases in both St. Louis and Philadelphia before he was finally cast off and excommunicated in a trade to Toronto. Feel free to simply google search “Scott Rolen Drama” for more info, LOL.

I remember growing up as a young kid and my dad would take me to Phillies games. I fell in love with Rolen, Doug Glanville, Robert Person, Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Mike Lieberthal, Rico Brogna and Curt Schilling to name a few. I remember my dad saying Scott Rolen was one of the best in the game and I became a huge fan.

That is only one example - Santo was known for being a poor teammate at times and he did not put emphasis on being well-liked. Scott Rolen doesn't have any of these obstacles. Santo played in an era where defense wasn't understood as well as it is today. The same was true for most of Rolen's career, but current voters understand defense better ...
