This is a research robot, aimed at studying teamwork and inter-robot communication. To do this, the s-bots have several special abilities: Using their gripper (red in the photos), they can connect. Then they can, for instance, pass over gap and steps where a single robot would have failed.

An important part of the swarm-bots project consists in the physical construction of at least one swarm-bot, that is, a self-assembling and self-organising robot colony made of a number (30-35) of smaller devices, called s-bots.

Each s-bot is a fully autonomous mobile robot capable of performing basic tasks such as autonomous navigation, perception of its surrounding environment, and grasping of objects. A s-bot is also thought to be able to communicate with other peer units and physically join either rigidly or flexibly to them, thus forming a swarm-bot.

We describe the s-bot, a small autonomous robot with self-assembling capabilities that we designed and built within the project. Then we illustrate the cooperative object transport scenario that we chose to use as a test-bed for our robots.

The S-Bots are the secondary antagonists of the 2012 video game The Amazing Spider-Man, an adaptation of the eponymous superhero film. They are robots created by Alistair Smythe who are trying to help Alistair Smythe in his plot.
