Air hammer second best, third pending on model year the axle has a indent recess I use then ball peen hammer end with a 4lb mallet hammer back end of it and go ham at it.

No surprise there, E46 is prone to rust, especially in side skirt, rear arch areas. First I recommend check overall rust level on the car, because it might be too far gone to try to repair it.

That rust is most likely coming up from behind (inside) the panel, so if you start grinding away from the outside, by the time you have removed the rust and are down to clean metal, you will have a hole.

I’ve know Rusty since it was a stanced black 535i. Before being totaled due to A pillar damage, and becoming Rusty v1. Then evolving into Rusty v2 with a JZ swap.

Oct 15, 2021 · A lot of the rusty fasteners make things look worse than they probably actually are. The problem with rust, though, is that it’s usually what you can’t see that’s the issue. Stuff like the RTAB pocket, and non-painted surfaces can likely be cleaned up with a wire wheel and coated with por15 for future protection.
