America’s dominance at Royal Troon finally came to an end in 2016 – but only thanks to one of the great Open Championship rounds from Henrik Stenson. Sunday quickly became a two-horse race – Royal Troon’s very own version of Turnberry’s famous 1977 Duel in the Sun.

The foundation of Troon Golf Club in 1878 was secured by reaching agreement with an the landowner – ththe 5 Duke of Portland – who granted permission for Members to play golf over his thground between the Craigend and Pow Burns.

Tam Arte Quam Marte – as much by skill as by strength – is the Latin motto of Royal Troon Golf Club. Its nine Open champions have had to outwit every bit as much as overpower this vintage Ayrshire links that dates back to the 19 th century.
