In the United States, road signs are, for the most part, standardized by federal regulations, most notably in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and its companion volume the Standard Highway Signs (SHS).

Layouts for new and significantly revised signs in the 2009 MUTCD have been included in the 2012 Supplement to the 2004 Edition of Standard Highway Signs. Two types of files are available for standard signs: Full-size, vector-based, undimensioned sign layout in EPS format.
