He is traditionally depicted dressed in Lincoln green. Today, he is most closely associated with his stance of "robbing the rich to give to the poor". There exists no canonical version of the Robin Hood mythos, which has resulted in different creators imbuing their adaptations with different messages over the centuries.

Dives and Pauper opens with a fairly short dialogue, ‘Holy Poverty’, in which the speakers are, as in the body of the treatise, Dives, a rich layman, and Pauper, a well read poor preacher. Dives sets out to prove that Pauper, a learned man, is a fool because he fails to make use of his intellect to gain wealth for himself.
