The Reedy Point Bridge is located about a mile from the east end of the C&D Canal. There is a very good view of the canal entrance from the northbound lane of DE-9 as you cross the bridge. The canal entrance is also visible from the access road that runs along the south side of canal.

A survey of possible water routes across the Delmarva Peninsula was conducted in 1764 as a way to shorten the shipping distance by nearly 300 miles between Baltimore and Philadelphia.

A two-lane cantilever bridge similar in appearance to the Platt Bridge in Southwest Philadelphia, the Reedy Point Bridge was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and opened in 1968, replacing a lift bridge that crossed the C&D Canal prior to the 1955 widening project.
