While it is true that rabbits will readily use them, brush piles are also havens to box turtles, fence lizards, songbirds, small rodents and other mammals as large as black bears. The term “brush pile” is commonly understood to be a pile of limbs arranged to permit entry of small wild-life to the exclusion of larger animals that may prey on them.

Rabbits will often begin using a brush pile the night after it is made. Practically any brush growth is good material. It is best to pile the brush over large rocks, old culvert pipe or discarded farm equipment. This keeps the brush off the ground and allows rabbits more freedom of movement.

Jul 21, 2022 · To build a brush pile, simply gather some fallen branches and twigs and pile them up in a corner of your yard or garden. Make sure the pile is big enough for a rabbit to hide in, but not so big that it becomes a hazard.

For a brush pile to work, they should be designed to provide good cover for rabbits while at the same time allow for the ability to quickly flush rabbits, provide internal ventilation and be easy to maintain.
