Nov 14, 2008 · The field is named for the Class of 1886, whose members contributed a $6000 reunion gift in 1906 to create an athletic field. This class also gave their support to the new gymnasium that was approved during their time at RPI and completed in 1887.

The ’86 Field (gift of the class of 1886) previously hosted Rensselaer’s Division III football games and other campus events. The ’87 Gymnasium (gift of the class of 1887) has a swimming pool, two small gymnasia, an indoor track, and racquetball and squash courts.
