The R40 was a New York City Subway car model built by the St. Louis Car Company from 1967 to 1969 for the IND / BMT B Division. There were 400 cars in the R40 fleet, arranged in married pairs.

R40/R40M Cars In 1965, the Transit Authority contracted with Raymond Loewy and Associates to design a new exterior and interior for its subway cars to encourage people to use mass transit. The resulting design featured a slanted end of each subway car, wider doors and windows, and updated signage.

In 1967 and into 1968 the St. Louis Car Company would deliver the 400 cars of contract R40. By the time delivery was complete the supposed new standard car for the system had been thru two major design modifications.

Mar 23, 2021 · The R40 cars, 400 in total, came in three different variants. The first two hundred had the slanted end and no air conditioning. The next one hundred retained the slant end but had factory air conditioning installed.

Jan 8, 2015 · These were very futuristic-looking when they originally hit the tracks on BMT and IND lines in 1968-1969, even more so than the corrugated stainless steel R-32s from 1965, because they were shovel-nosed, with slanted fronts designed by famed French industrial designer Raymond Loewy.
