I have custom firmware in my 3ds but its cool to have an R4 as well yo take advantage of the ds/3ds slot and save more space to your sd of the 3ds. I didn't see any difference in the performance anyway.

The R4i 3ds Gold+ card is the way to go and it will help hack your 3ds w/o "Powerful Computer." If you live within the United States I recommend ordering from modchipsdirect but if not go nds-card which ships from China. Both are very respectable sites.
