Dec 1, 2012 · The R-390 was a very hard radio to maintain as well as expensive so that is why the 390A was developed. Ive worked on scores of both in the USN and later when they started showing up surplus in the late 60's and I had a moonlight job for Herb Gordon Company getting them up to specs.

Nov 11, 2020 · The S-120 developed from the ~1946 S-38A and on to the end of Halli which milked the basic AA5 design for decades with just cosmetic changes. When sunspots were down so were the signals on Band 4. Even my beefed up HRO-60 and Collins R-390A suffer on the higher frequencies as does any of the super expensive SS gear. SX-140.
