The PvT surface above represents a substance which contracts upon freezing. Most substances do so, the notable exception being water which expands upon freezing. A considerable amount of information about the phases of matter can be illustrated with the PvT surface.

The surface is described by the Equation of State of the material and is the locus of all equilibrium states of the material. The diagram shows regions associated with solid, liquid and gas phases. Regions in which two phases co-exist are normal to.
