God is sarcastic and never gives Punpun straightforward or helpful answers. He often mocks Punpun for being cowardly and continuing to live a dull life. His advice to Punpun becomes increasingly violent over the course of the story, often encouraging Punpun to injure and rape.

Goodnight Punpun follows the life experiences of Punpun Onodera, a young boy living in Japan, as well as a few of his friends. The story follows Punpun as he grows up, splitting it into around four stages of his life: elementary school, middle school, high school, and his early 20s.
