Lava Rock vs Pumice - Bonsai Nut
May 4, 2018 · Many forms of pumice are more porous and lighter than lava - hold more water than lava. Many forms of pumice can be crushed between your fingers. Others are pretty darn firm, more similar to what I think of as lava rock. From what I've seen of pumice and lava, I think there's a spectrum between the two.
Michael Hagedorn on 100% pumice soil | Bonsai Nut
Feb 28, 2025 · I was using 50-50 pumice and lava, but the lava has to be sifted on site at a landscape supplier, while high-quality, bonsai-appropriate pumice is available "locally" (2 hours away) for only $23.50 for a 45-lb bag. So, due to my laziness, I've shifted the lava portion of my mixes to pumice. My pines have been extremely healthy in 100% pumice.
Pumice and lava rock comparison - Bonsai Nut
Dec 3, 2014 · How does lava and pumice compare as far as moisture retention, aeration, and CEC? I was thinking of only using one or the other along with akadama for next seasons repotting. I'm in favor of lava rock just because it looks nicer mixed with akadama than pumice does, but everyone was going...

Do any of you keep your trees in 100% pumice? - Bonsai Nut
May 4, 2020 · I normally do 100% DE, last season I tried pumice and really liked it. I was considering doing a 50/50 mix of DE and pumice for some JBPs. Would you that be just as good as 100% Pumice? Considering 100+ summers?
Pumice availability in So Cal | Bonsai Nut
Feb 6, 2024 · I use APL (Akadama, pumice, lava) in 1:1:1 for pines. This works well in my climate .I would think that pure pumice in a shallow bonsai pot would dry out way too quickly. For deciduous I use more akadama; like 2:1:1. Your climate in Petaluma is somewhat milder than the furnace of the central valley. Even in same zone.
Lava vs pumice vs leca soil test - Bonsai Nut
Aug 10, 2020 · Clearly, pumice holds more water than the other two. Lava and leca are close, and have more air filled porosity. So if your pots are not holding enough water, add more pumice to the mix. If your pots are staying wet too long, add more lava to the mix. Leca is a pretty good material, more like lava than pumice in water holding and air holding ...
Pumice as substrate.. | Bonsai Nut
Dec 11, 2015 · Pumice is in abundance here in NZ and very cheap. I buy it from a wholesaler at $7 per 20kg bag. Nothing else is being allowed into the country, so I'm restricted to using only that. I even mix the sifted fines into my grow beds.... I came to realise that it might actually be a good thing (saves...
