After the First Partition of Poland in 1772, the newly annexed Royal Prussia and Warmia became the Province of West Prussia, while the Duchy of Prussia (along with part of Warmia) became the Province of East Prussia.

The Russian invasion of East Prussia occurred during World War I, lasting from August to September 1914.
