Prophet Amos as depicted by Gustave Doré. Before becoming a prophet, Amos was a shepherd and a sycamore fig farmer from Teqoaʿ. [2] Amos aimed his prophetic message at the northern kingdom of Israel, particularly the cities of Samaria and Bethel. [3]

Simple and uneducated, yet fervent in his faith and zealous for the glory of God, this former shepherd of sheep and goats, and dresser of sycamore trees (Amos 7:14-15) was chosen by the Lord for prophetic service.
