Alexander IV (born 1199, Anagni, near Rome [Italy]—died May 25, 1261, Viterbo, Papal States) was the pope from 1254 to 1261. Alexander was appointed cardinal deacon (1227) and cardinal bishop of Ostia (1231) by his uncle Pope Gregory IX .

Pope Alexander IV was the 181st Pope of the Roman Catholic Church and the fourth man to select the name Alexander upon his election. He served for more than eight years and oversaw some of the French inquisitions.

Alexander IV ruled the spiritual affairs of the Church with dignity and prudence. As Pope , he continued to show great favor to the children of St. Francis. One of his first official acts was to canonize St. Clare.
