Moored outside the museum is a replica of the Amsterdam, an 18th-century ship which sailed between the Netherlands and the East Indies. The replica was built in 1985–1990. A 1990 replica of the Amsterdam is moored next to the museum.

The replica of the three masted “Amsterdam”, a large vessel of the Dutch East India Company, which in its maiden journey to Batavia sank in a storm in the English Channel in winter of 1749, stands high above the waters of Ij Bay, directly at the Amsterdam maritime museum quay.

The Amsterdam was a Dutch "Transom Return Ship" (Dutch: Spiegelretourschip) built as an East Indiaman for transport between the Dutch Republic and the settlements and strongholds of the Dutch East India Company in the East Indies.

This replica of the Dutch East Indiaman ship Amsterdam is docked right beside The National Maritime Museum. Walk, climb on the ship, lay in the hammocks, visit the captains cabin and discover much more.

At the jetty outside the museum, you will find three ships you definitely should not miss during a visit: East Indiaman Amsterdam (a replica of the famous ship that got lost on its first voyage in 1749), powerhouse ss Christiaan Brunings from 1900 and the Royal Barge from 1818.

In the seventies a group of young eccentrics sailed to a canal in Amsterdam. A collection of rebels, consisting of artists, architects, writers, sailors and the occasional pirate, moored their sailers alongside the Nieuwendammerkade. A vibrant community was born.
