May 14, 2007 · Best test to give them is a hands on. A branch test layout is a good one to try. Just give them a piece of 12" pipe and ask them to layout there saddle cut to 90 degree branch onto another 12" pipe, no actual cutting or welding needed to see if the person can fit pipe.

The contractor will employ a fitter/helper that the welder provides who can help with the fit on the branch part of the test. I have taken many tests as a fitter/helper for the same welder and we have always done well.

AWS D1.1-2008-Fig. 4.27 test position used for 6GR Welder Qualification.Table 4.10-Under "Production Pipe Welding Qualified" Column limits qualifcation range with Note "d".Root run done with LB52U + Fill/Cap with LB52 Due to this limitation, basically 6GR NOT qualified for pipe welding where internal access not possible for backgouging.

Fitting for boilers takes comealongs, chainfalls, ropes twisted around tubes, wooden and steel wedges, and at least one "HURRY UP NAIL IT !"

Some of the concepts are much easier to understand and has alot of useful formulas and such. Welding stores usually have them also.Henry
