Nov 16, 2007 · There is a Phoenix log hauler in Wabeno, WI. it is shown every year at the local show. it is neat to see run. i have a short video of it being run around, plus a few pics of it. i see it in the winter when i drive my snowmobile past it, it sits under a roof and steel link fence around it.

The Lombard Steam log hauler was a four cylinder "steam locomotive on treads" used to haul logs out of the forest on long sled trains. Three are known to be in operation, including this one, built in 1909 under license by the Phoenix Company of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for use in the forests near Wabeno, Wisconsin.

The Phoenix logger was derived from the Lombard Steam Log Hauler, patented on 29 May 1901 by Alvin Lombard, and was built under licence by the Phoenix Manufacturing company of Eau Claire. However the drive system was quite different. It says "Newport Mining Co" on the tender.

This Phoenix Steam Log Hauler was built by the, Phoenix Manufacturing Company of Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1898, which is about 10 years earlier than the Holt Caterpillar according to the November-December issue of the ALBUM.

Apr 24, 2018 · Phoenix is an interesting story. They stuck with Lombards first design which they built under license and which Lombard had moved away from fairly early. They had quite a bit of success with it. As late as 1922 they were developing a much more advanced steamer with some interesting features.
