The temple holds the sacred Buddha’s tooth and, for 10 nights every summer, a grand procession is held to honour this relic. It’s one of Sri Lanka’s – indeed, Asia’s – biggest festivals.

There are four major ceremonies held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of Tooth Relic) in Kandy every year. They are; Karthika Mangallaya. Of these, the most important is the Esala Mangallaya for which the Dalada Perahera is one of the most colourful and vibrant cultural celebrations in Sri Lanka.
