Jul 6, 2016 · Pee Dee “The Pirate” did not become East Carolina University’s mascot until 1983. A live wildcat was the mascot from 1930-31. A Great Dane named "Buc" became the mascot in 1958, followed by a large white French Poodle in 1968.

Oct 6, 2023 · This October commemorates the 40 th anniversary of the adoption of The Pirate, also known as Pee Dee, as East Carolina University’s mascot. The announcement was featured on the front page of the East Carolinian on October 6, 1983 .

The Pee Dee River is a river along the North Carolina and South Carolina border where pirates often set up camp. The name was less than popular with ECU students, and in 1985 Chancellor Howell decided on his own to drop "Pee Dee" and be known only as "The Pirates".

Jul 5, 2016 · There was a contest to name the Pirate, where the elementary schools of Pitt County were involved and from the nickname PeeDee the Pirate was derived. The name PeeDee was believed to come from the Pee Dee Rivers that flow through North and South Carolina.

Jul 7, 2016 · In December of 1985, the Chancellor of ECU decided to drop the nickname PeeDee from the mascot's name, and to only be called the Pirate. This was a result from ECU's student body who said that it was unfair because they did not have any say in naming the mascot.

The Pee Dee River, running along the border between North Carolina and South Carolina, was a popular encampment for the pirates of the area. The mascot's appearance is based on the most well-known 18th century pirate of the region, Edward “Blackbeard” Teach.
