Paraiyar, [1] Parayar[2] or Maraiyar (formerly anglicised as Pariah / pəˈraɪ.ə / pə-RY-ə and Paree) [3] is a caste group found in the Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala and in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Paraiyar is a Tamil caste found in northern and eastern Sri Lanka. They are traditional parai -drummers who were also involved in weaving and scavenging.

In 1918, the Adi Dravida Mahajan Sabha also requested the Indian government use the term to replace the current but pejorative term "Pariah" (Paraiyar) used for the community.
