The Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) A3 was a class of 0-4-0 steam locomotives built at Altoona Works between 1895 until 1905. The A3s were used as switchers for railroad cars at various PRR yards. Later, some A3s were converted to A3a, which had saddle tanks instead of tenders. [1]

Feb 27, 2019 · I've been quite happy with my A3, though I did redesign it to be one of the saddle tank versions the PRR built. That adds a few pounds of tank and water for traction. It will pull two adults around the St.Croix track with a 1% ruling grade.

Oct 19, 2018 · It is a 3.5” gauge, 1:16 scale (3/4” to a foot) model of an 0-4-0 Pennsylvania Switcher Type A3. The drivers are 3.25” diameter and the cylinder bore is 7/8” with a stroke of 1-1/4". It will have Walshaerts type valve gear, will be coal-fired with a running pressure of 100psi.

Feb 2, 2003 · A3: Formerly class U; 81 were built at Altoona between 1887-1891. Equipped with the PRR's trademark Belpaire firebox. Some converted to Class A3a tank locomotives, some surviving into the 1930s in this form. A4: 64 of these were built at Altoona, 1906-1913. The drivers were 50" and a Belpaire firebox was used.
